About

Built by an operator. For operators.

Element Accounting is a fractional finance practice built around one belief: the best financial advice comes from people who've actually closed the books, fought through the cleanup, and sat next to the owner when the decision had to be made.

We're based in Charleston, South Carolina, and we work with owners and operators across the country. The practice is led by a senior finance professional with more than a decade of controller and CFO experience across an unusually wide range of industries — by design, not by accident.

Why generalists

Most fractional finance shops pick a vertical and never leave it. We picked the harder path on purpose.

Good financial discipline travels — a clean monthly close, a defensible balance sheet, an honest cash forecast, a KPI dashboard tied to operations — these don't change much whether you're running a manufacturer, a restaurant group, or a candle company. What changes is the operational nuance, and we've learned that nuance the hard way: in the GL, on the floor, and in the owner's office across a lot of very different businesses.

Industries we've built finance functions inside

  • Manufacturing (domestic and international)
  • Luxury goods e-commerce
  • Brick-and-mortar retail
  • Construction
  • Independent bookshops
  • Tour and hospitality operators
  • Ferry and passenger transport
  • Bars and restaurants
  • Convenience stores
  • Yoga studios and wellness
  • Subscription and membership businesses
  • Working artists and creative practices

What we believe

  • Books are a tool, not a chore. If your financial reporting isn't helping you run the business, something is wrong with the reporting — not the business.
  • Clean before clever. No dashboard, forecast, or fancy KPI helps if the underlying close is broken.
  • The owner is the customer. Bookkeepers report. Controllers organize. CFOs help leadership make decisions. We aim for the third one.
  • Process beats heroics. The goal is a finance function that doesn't depend on any one person — including us. Built right, most of it should run while you sleep.
  • Automation is the easy part. What to measure, how to reconcile it, when a number is lying to you, what decision follows — that's the work. The systems let that judgment scale. They aren't the fee.

Where we work

We're based in the Lowcountry and meet with local clients in person when it helps. Most of the work — close, reporting, forecasting, dashboards — happens remotely with scheduled working sessions, so we take on engagements anywhere in the U.S.

Local service area: Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, James Island, Johns Island, West Ashley, North Charleston, Summerville, Nexton, Goose Creek, Hanahan, Moncks Corner, and the surrounding Lowcountry.
